Introduction
The increasing cost of healthcare has prompted many health plans to adopt plan designs incorporating higher deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums in order in order to control costs and to keep premiums at affordable levels. As a result, plan members are now required to become more engaged in navigating the healthcare system in an attempt to make informed and cost-effective decisions. While, in many cases this trend has allowed health plans to remain competitive and viable, plan members have faced challenges. In 2007, 62% of bankruptcies filed in the U.S. included unpaid medical expenses as an underlying component. Of those people filing, 80% were covered by some form of health insurance.
HPA's RoleHealth Payment Advocates (HPA) is a financial advocacy company dedicated to resolving problems and confusion surrounding the “patient portion” of medical bills by negotiating on the member’s behalf to either reduce the member’s out-of-pocket responsibility and/or establish payment arrangements suitable to the member’s financial situation. HPA ProcessThe process begins with a simple phone call from the member. Once the member has contacted an HPA Advocate, we work directly with the medical provider’s office to review the charges and to facilitate a payment scenario that is suitable to the member’s financial situation. More |
