Frequently Asked Questions?

Why should I use HPA?

HPA Representatives are experts in the fields of health insurance, medical billing, and negotiations. We have existing relationships with thousands of medical providers across the country and can access those relationships on your behalf. We will work to make certain that you are not being charged for any amounts which are over-and-above the absolute minimum payment which will close your account.

Is HPA a Medical Debt Consolidation Firm?

No. HPA has one single focus – Reviewing and negotiating your medical bills directly with the provider on your behalf… And only charging you when we successfully reduce your liability. (Note: This service is free of charge to Assurant policyholders for a limited time).

Debt consolidators may look to combine all of your medical billings and offer you an opportunity to refinance the total of those bills through their credit process. They can make huge sums at your expense whether you save any money through their services or not.

Do you combine my bills with other clients?

No. HPA reviews and negotiates your individual claims one at a time – paying close attention to the unique characteristics of each bill and asking the provider to give consideration to pertinent issues.

Other firms may aggregate your bills with the bills of other clients in an attempt to leverage those payments until a discount is received. This may create animosity between you and your medical provider, often times altering the relationship you have built over many years of service.

Why do health care providers agree to work with HPA?

Medical Providers work with hundreds of different health insurance plans each day, and are not always equipped to recognize what charges not paid by your health plan should not be billed to you. HPA representatives work with the provider’s billing agent in a highly professional manner to clarify the specific issues with your medical bill, and will work to have the billed amount settled for the proper amount in a timely manner.

How will HPA represent my interests with my doctor?

HPA understands that the bond you have with your doctor is extremely valuable, and our efforts will not adversely affect that relationship. Our Representatives will always act in a professional manner and will explain our role to your doctor’s office in detail.

Will my credit score suffer as a result?

No. HPA understands that a promise of timely payment in full to the provider gives them an incentive to work with us on your behalf.

Other firms may ask that you withhold payment from your provider for several months until a discount is received; activating the provider’s collection process and putting your credit score at risk.

Who actually pays my Provider?

You do. HPA insists that the payment made to you provider comes directly from you, and stays within your control at all times.

Other firms may act as a financial “go-between” with you and your medical provider, and may not always make those payments in a timely manner.

How much will the service cost me?

Please contact your Benefits Administrator for verification of the fees associated with your Health Plan.

For a limited time only, Policyholders of Assurant Health are able to access HPA’s services free of charge.

What do I need to do to get started?

Simply contact HPA toll free at 877-277-0080 and ask about our ability to assist you with your medical bills.

What authorization does the provider need?

Not very frequently, but in certain cases, your provider may require you to sign a HIPAA authorization form, allowing us to negotiate on your behalf.  Once the process has begun, if this becomes an issue, we will notify you that the authorization is required, and you can download the form here.
